A Hollywood Rape

Part of: Hollywood

Breakfast: half of an egg bagel

Ms. Stone,

Hi, my name is X and I happened upon your article about how being a [script]reader is akin to chinese water torture. At the time I was trying to find out how to become a freelance reader. Unfortunately, your very humorous article could not deter me from lusting after the chinese water torture. I know this is completely out of the blue, but I was wondering if you could pass along any wisdom about how to become a freelance reader. I just graduated from film school in X, and have already lined up an internship at "X" Entertainment in July. I can't wait to move out there and start, but the problem is that my internship is full time and unpaid. I figured since I love reading scripts (good and bad), and enjoy writing coverage, the best thing for me to do in order to pay the rent is: (drum roll) become a reader. I have no idea how to go about doing that, and I was hoping you could give me some advice. I'm sure you're a busy woman, so I'll end the note here. Thank you for your time and I hope to hear from you soon.

your friend and more formidable opponent on the
battlefield of wit,

X

Hey, X,

Well it's very difficult to make a living as a reader. There's no way you'll be able to support yourself, and I'm sure they'll make you read tons of scripts for your internship. your internship is 40+ hours a week without pay? That's crazy. If I were you I would get a paying job, because they're taking advantage of you. I mean, at least get in the mailroom somewhere and get paid something (Endeavor, ICM, William Morris, CAA etc.) If you were only doing the internship for summer and getting class credit, I would say that's fine. I'm not getting the vibe that you have a trust fund.
