Writing Tip Du Jour--Dialogue Pages

Part of: Literati

Breakfast: Banana Nutri Grain Muffin Bar and 1/2 a Vitamin water (power-c)

Why do a lot of screenwriters (even with agents) suck at writing dialogue? I do not know, but it is a pet peeve of mine. Sure you can still get your script optioned, but someone else might rewrite the dialogue. If you decide to work with a writing partner, please make sure that one of you can write sharp dialogue.

Luckily, I've always been told that I have a good ear for dialogue. I can't explain how I developed this talent-- perhaps because I've been a chronic eavesdropper for years. I also tend to listen to people more and talk less.

The best exercise I've been given for becoming a better dialogue writer was from one of my fiction teachers in college. She would make people eavesdrop and copy people's conversations word for word.
