Call me old-fashioned, but I didn't want to say that Just and Cam were splitsville until it was officially announced. If I had know how lame the announcement was going to be, I would have written about their breakup earlier.

Justin Timberlake and Cameron Diaz issued the following joint statement on Thursday:

"It has always been our preference not to comment on the status of our relationship, but, out of respect for the time we've spent together, we feel compelled to do so now, in light of recent speculation and the number of inaccurate stories that are being reported by the media. We have, in fact, ended our romantic relationship and have done so mutually and as friends, with continued love and respect for one another."

How ridiculous is that first line? They should have kept mum on the subject-- that would have been classy. The media were going to print the same stories and will continue to with or without a statement. Stars should just make up outlandish reasons for their splits. For example, Cam could have said that Justin cheated on her with 20 hookers in Thailand. He could have countered that with the news that Cam got so wasted that she gave away her 'promise' ring to a homeless woman. Sometimes I think stars would fair better if they hired writers instead of publicists.
